The Daily Mirror - History Behind It

The Daily Mirror is a British national daily tabloid newspaper founded in 1903. It is owned by parent company Trinity Mirror owned by Rupert Murdoch. Simon Fox has been assigned as the CEO of the company. Trinity Mirror plc. is the largest newspaper, magazine and digital publisher in Britain. It is a tabloid newspaper that offers the latest news, current affairs, celebrity gossip and showbiz. The Daily Mirror states that "The world is a complex place right now and we aim to help our readers make sense of the constant changes through our pages." We can clearly understand who the target audience is for this newspaper from the simplistic language and tons of pictures that are all over the newspaper. It is a left-wing newspaper as we can see how they feel about Trump winning the election in 2016. The Daily Mirror's political allegiance is very similar to The Guardian's. They are a labor supporting newspaper and throughout its history, the Mirror has campaigned strongly for the party in all recent elections and "poured scorn on the Tories".

To begin with, the Mirror has decided to show their grief by not putting Trump's face on the cover. They have chosen to display an embarrassed Statue of Liberty. Her facial expressions connote shame and disappointment. The statue's actions juxtaposes with what its actually portraying: freedom. Moreover, the dark gathering clouds show the disaster that is awaiting for America. The tabloid newspaper has got a strong bias, and a strong message of disapproval against president Trump, since they are supporting the left labor. America's pride was the statue of liberty because it resembles liberty and freedom: it welcomes migrants to America. We can almost describe it as her shedding tears of sadness as they strongly express their disapproval of what Trump stands for, perhaps apologizing to the world how shameful the election turned out to be. We can clearly understand why the newspaper chose to represent his victory in a negative way, as Trump is a republican and his political party differs from Daily Mirror's. In addition to this, they didn't even publish his picture in order to show how unimportant he is. The readership of the Mirror will strongly agree with them.

The Times - History Behind It

The Times is a daily newspaper published in London and it is known as one of Britain’s oldest and most influential newspapers. In 1981 Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation acquired the paper through its purchase of Times Newspapers. In 2013 News Corporation divided its print and its television and film holdings into separate conglomerates, and ownership of the paper was transferred to the reconstituted News Corporation. For much more than a century The Times has been an integral and important part of the political structure of Great Britain. Its news and its editorial comment have in general been carefully coordinated, and have at most times been handled with an earnest sense of responsibility. The Times is a central/ right leaning newspaper, slightly supporting labor, therefore they strongly support Donald Trump and his beliefs.

The paper is paying tribute to Trump as they have chosen one proud picture of the president to show his victory. Unlike Daily Mirror,who have shamed Trump, they have represented the president positively. We can clearly see the Trump's fist, this connoting his success and how he is portrayed along the flag of the US. This perhaps signifies that Trump is the new ruler, and the newspaper along with its readership are paying their respects to the new leader.
